Introduction

Welcome to the English Language Blog!
I will post things for you to do as homework or self-study on this blog.
There are also links to different websites where you can practise your English.
In this 'Introduction' section, I give you some ideas for self-study.

Do your self-study on paper or open a blog of your own. You can keep your blog private but I recommend you invite me stardust1664@yahoo.co.uk so I can see your work and give you feedback.
Blog sites include : blogger, wordpress

  • Vocabulary: Keep a record of new words from each lesson. Record the word, pronunciation, meaning and use it in an example sentence. Write a translation in your language too.
  • You could use this great ap from British Council to make your own vocabulary lists and test yourself on your phone! (only iPhones and Android phones) MyWordBook
  • Watch TV or films in English. Use the subtitles to help you.
  • Listen to the radio in English. Even if you don't understand, don't worry! Just put it on in the background when you're doing housework or something. It will help you hear the intonation or 'music' of the English language.
  • Read in English - newspapers like The Metro are free or online. Get graded reader books from the library too.
  • Write - keep a diary on your blog or write a review of a film/ book/ gig/ exhibition.
  • Record your pronunciation with tools such as Vocaroo, Voki or Audioboo. Listen to my recordings of vocab on the blog and copy the pronunciation.
  • Keep speaking in English. Use audioboo to record yourself talking. Try the speaking tasks from the class again or just talk about something that interests you, then listen to yourself speaking English.
  • Join some of the social programme events - see the noticeboard in the ELS department or find SocProg on Facebook.
