1. In contrast = opposite

2. Conclusion (overview) – no figures and numbers – too much detail

3. Passive/ active : It ~~was~~ gone up

4. Fell ~~down~~/ grow up

5. Not enough variety: fluctuate, remain constant, isn’t as + adjective + as

6. Present perfect and simple

“lamb has fallen since 1997”

“lamb fell in 1997”

Increase/ decrease/ decline etc

Adverbs: dramatically/ significantly/ gradually/ Steadily etc

Adjectives: Steady, gradual

1. There was a + adjective + noun

There was a steady increase

2. It + verb + adverb

It declined steadily.

Compare:

Comparatives/ superlatives:

Larger/ bigger/ more expensive /smaller/ the biggest

· Much, a lot (adverbs of quantity)

(10% and 12% respectively)

There is a large difference between …X and …Y

Difference (n) and different (adj)

If they are over 65, they should stop work

The pension system is very low/ not supportive

People should stop work earlier than 65 to give more (economic/ job) opportunities to the younger generation

After retirement, people can work in a part-time job. There are people who want to work more so if they continue working, they can remain healthy. They set-up a small shop.

Older people can’t work as quickly as younger people and can be more easily injured.

Demanding jobs

If it’s compulsory, the marriage rate might fall.

They have to pay for education. It costs too much.

Which is similar to ….

The government cannot afford to support everything so we need to reshape the economy.

If someone doesn’t hope to have children, then they can’t be happy.

To keep the population rate high/ to retain the culture.

Families should look after old people as much as possible but not always. Sometimes they need to get outside help like assistance or a helper. If families are always looking after older people, they won’t be able to work or have enough time.

Older people die and it goes unnoticed.

If I get married and become a wife, I have to look after her. I have to give back to + person

The families should support them financially.

They are very vulnerable.

In-laws…but in the same area (in close proximity)

It’s difficult to live together – families need their space.

They have a wealth of experience and knowledge.

They are very wise.

Taking medicine is not natural.

If they do these sports, it’s likely they will be injured so they are taking a risk.

They should pay for being overweight or for smoking because if they don’t care about these problems, they are more likely to be sick.

Overeating or smoking is more like an addiction but you should take care of yourself. The problem can’t be solved by money. They are aware of the risks.
